The Procedure
During the first consultation, Dr. Castillo will conduct a detailed examination of your physical characteristics and treatment preferences to determine the ideal implant volume. He will discuss your aesthetic goals with you, and take photos and measurements. He will fully explain the breast augmentation procedure and characteristics of breast implants to you, as well as benefits and possible complications. He will answer any questions you have to ensure you make an informed decision. Before your surgery, laboratory blood tests will be taken to ensure you are in good general health.
Dr. Castillo works in a hospital with a registered anesthesiologist who will select the best type of anesthesia for you. To place the implant, Dr. Castillo will create a subtle incision that will result in minimal scarring. Based on your body type and the size of your implant, he will help you choose the optimal incision site. The doctor will place the implant through this incision, positioning it either behind the pectoral muscle or between the muscle and the breast tissue. Then he will carefully close the incision using internal absorbable sutures and surgical tape.
Results and Recovery
Following your procedure, you should notice immediate results. You may experience some swelling and minimal discomfort, which can be controlled with mild medication. You may also need to wear a sports bra or compression bandage, and Dr. Castillo will make recommendations regarding physical activity and when you can return to work. In ten to fourteen days, you will need to return to the office for a follow-up, and to have your tape removed. As you recover and swelling subsides, the results of your breast augmentation will become more apparent. Remember that as you age, the shape and size of your breasts may change. If you wish to correct these normal changes, an implant exchange or a breast lift may be necessary in the future.
Types of Implants
There are several types of implants available. At your initial consultation, Dr. Castillo will explain your options and help you choose the best one based on your body type, your natural breast size, the elasticity of your skin, and your desired outcome. The different implants include:
- Cohesive gel silicone implants: Silicone gel implants, which are pre-filled with silicone gel, more closely match the look and feel of natural fat and breast tissue. These are the type of implants that Dr. Castillo works with.
- Saline implants: After the doctor places the empty implants, he will fill them with a sterile salt water solution. Saline implants are more likely to produce a rippled effect in overlying skin. Some patients believe these implants do not feel as natural as silicone implants.
- Polyurethane Gel implants: These cohesive gel silicone implants are covered with a thin layer of polyurethane foam. The primary advantage of these implants is that they pose a much lower risk for capsular contracture.
